Going with the Flow {Personal} Birthday Winner!

One BIG thing that is important to learn as an adult is that “going with the flow” is vital to navigating everything life throws at you. This goes for anyone, but becomes paramount once we become parents. Nothing like a little baby to make one reassess what is truly important, what matters most, and what things can wait, be put on hold or tossed aside forever.

My birthday weekend was just another example of this in my life 😉 We had big plans to get away (Henry was very very excited to sleep over at Oma and Opa’s house), to drive up the gorge, find an idyllic camping spot, go fishing without monitoring a curious three year old, hike to a new waterfall and maybe end with a nice lunch down town. Instead, my sweet husband spent most of the weekend working on our first child – the westfalia vanagon. Our much loved vehicle is high maintenance. Which, if you are a Westy owner, this is not a surprise to you. One of my favorite things when on a trip in the “Beaver”, is passing other VW vanagons, there is a camaraderie – a wave, a honk – that only comes from being in the trenches with your vehicle (ie towed, stranded, smoking, stalled etc). But for the other three out of five trips you have in that blessed vehicle, it’s a great feeling to be wild & free, popped up under the stars and enjoying your PBR or smores.

So instead, we watched a movie, watched the sunset, and had a nice late dinner – staying out later than people with small children usually do. And the irony of being a parent? While you enjoy the peace, the quiet, the eating your meal without pulling a stray child back into his seat for the 500th time, it’s a little too peaceful, too quiet, and you miss that little wiggle worm that takes up so much energy.

And now that all my cards are opened, gift cards spent, and cake almost gone, it’s time to announce my birthday winner! Congratulations Dara! 🙂
